Our Story

2 Minute read

Save Ancas Dogs Group was set up in late 2014 by a handful of dog lovers that came together via a heart breaking Facebook plea. A kind lady named Anca who had her own small shelter in Bucharest for homeless dogs was being evicted. 60+ dogs faced being returned back to the streets or caught by dog catchers and ending up in one of the notorious public shelters, never to be seen again.

Anca had lovingly rescued and cared for these dogs, many of whom were old, sick and very timid due to their harsh treatment and fear of humans. They would never of been able to fend for themselves on the streets, or survived the public shelters but as there was nowhere else for them to go it was only a matter of time before this would of been their fate. So the challenge was on and with very little time to spare animals lovers and rescues from Romania, the UK and parts of Europe came together with the collective goal of finding a safe place for each and every one of these dogs before the shelter was closed down.Thankfully with lots of work, long days and sleepless nights the goal was achieved and the dogs were saved just in time.

Although Anca no longer had her shelter she still faced the heartbreak on a daily basis of seeing dogs and cats abandoned and just trying to survive. She couldnt ignore this and so through her dedication and commitment to animals she continued to rescue as many as she could manage alone, even when this meant at the detriment of her own health. We couldnt abandon Anca, a lady that is an inspiration to all, so rather than disband, this small but very dedicated group decided to continue to provide help and support to Anca and the animals that she rescues. As part of Aid for Animals Charitable Trust, Save Ancas Dogs and Cats, a not for profit group was officially born in January 2016.

Sadly Anca's health continues to decline, however her devotion and love of animals does not. She still does all she can to help those in need however with limited resources and declining health a decision was made with Anca to extend support to other trusted independent rescuers in Romania as well.

Today Save Ancas Dogs and Cats continues to help Anca in her rescue efforts and a small network of trusted independent rescuers working across Romania. We wouldnt be able to do this without by our loyal and amazing supporters, many of whom have been with us from the beginning and have adopted animals rescued by Anca. Whether its donating a pound to fill a bowl of food for a homeless animal, baking a cake, setting up a fundraiser, sharing a Facebook post or offering a forever home, everything is appreciated and everything just as important to the cause.

We hope many more will join our fight to end the plight of all those animals suffering in Romania and beyond.
